Concrete Slab Cost by State: 20×20 Patio $2,990 to $4,510

A 20×20 concrete patio (4-inch, wire mesh, 4-inch stone base) typically costs $2,990 in Alabama and $4,510 in Hawaii, against $3,360 nationally, when the crew is paid each state’s BLS wages (May 2025, read October 2026). Concrete and materials are priced the same everywhere, so the spread is labour. Find your state below.

Every row is the same slab: 20×20 ft, 4 inches of 3,000 PSI ready-mix, wire mesh, 4-inch crushed-stone base, broom finish, forms, overhead and margin. Only the crew wage changes: half cement masons (47-2051) and half construction laborers (47-2061) at the state’s 25th percentile, median and 75th percentile hourly wages, times the BLS employer-cost burden for construction. The index is the state’s cement-mason median divided by the US median of $27.41. Wages: BLS OEWS May 2025 state file, read 14 October 2026.

Section 02 / Concrete Prices by State

Where We Have a State’s Own Ready-Mix Price

Ready-mix plants rarely publish prices. The four that do, and that our model uses, are in four states. Outside them, ask a local plant for its per-yard price, its small-load charge and its delivery charge before you compare quotes.

SupplierWhere3,000 PSI per cu yd4,000 PSI per cu yd
Supreme ConcreteLos Angeles, CA$127.05$132.00

Scenic City Ready MixTennessee$165.00$175.00
Section 03 / What Else Changes Locally

Why Your Local Quote Can Differ From Your State Row

  • Metro wages. BLS state medians average cities and rural areas together; a crew in a large metro is usually paid more than the state median.
  • Distance from the plant. Delivery charges grow with distance. Gehring, in Nebraska, publishes no mileage charge within 20 miles and a per-mile charge beyond it.
  • Frost and soil. Cold-climate codes and poor soil can call for a deeper base or thicker slab. Our row assumes a 4-inch base.
  • Permits. Fees are set by each city or county. Check yours; our rows include none.

For a quote you already have, the quote checker uses the same state wages at your size and spec.

Method / How We Price

How We Price a Slab

Every installed price on this site comes from one model: published ready-mix and materials prices, plus crew hours priced at Bureau of Labor Statistics wages, plus overhead and margin. The low figure uses the lowest published input and our lowest assumption at every step; the high figure uses the highest. The crew hours, overage and margin are our own estimates, not published figures, and are listed below so you can check them against your quote. Worked example: a 20 x 20 ft patio (national wages) (4-inch, 3,000 PSI, wire mesh, broom finish, 4-inch stone base).

LineLowTypicalHighBasis
Ready-mix concrete$659$754$8964.94 cu yd plus 5 to 10% overage, at published per-yard prices
Delivery and small-load charges$0$35$419Per-truck charges from the same price lists (10 yd per truck)
Crushed-stone base$261$325$4434 in compacted crusher run
Reinforcement$96$96$966x6 10-gauge mesh panels, lapped
Form lumber$30$45$61Perimeter boards, shared across reuses
Crew labour$770$1,332$2,101Crew hours x BLS wages x employer costs
Overhead and margin$363$776$1,60620% to 40% on direct cost
Installed total$2,180$3,360$5,620Rounded to the nearest $10

Not included: excavation and soil haul-off, removing an old slab, permits, pumping, decorative finishes and sealing. Totals are national; the calculators’ state option swaps in that state’s BLS wages and leaves concrete and materials at the published lists.

Published inputs (read 13 October 2026)

Our assumptions (estimates, not published figures)

  • Crew: half cement masons, half laborers.
  • Setup per job: 8 to 16 crew hours (layout, stripping, cleanup).
  • Per 100 sq ft: 4-inch 4 to 7 crew hours, 6-inch 5 to 8.5, 8-inch 6 to 10; add 0.5 to 1 for mesh or 1.5 to 2.5 for rebar.
  • Concrete overage 5% to 10%; base stone ordered at 1.2x its compacted volume; form boards charged at half to all of their price.
  • Overhead and margin 20% to 40% of direct cost.
  • 6-inch and thicker slabs use 4,000 PSI mix; thinner slabs 3,000 PSI.

FAQ

Concrete Slab Cost by State FAQ

On our model, with labour at each state's BLS wages, a 20×20 patio is cheapest in Alabama ($2,990), Mississippi ($2,990), Arkansas ($3,030), typical prices. The national figure is $3,360. The gap between states comes from crew wages only: we price concrete, stone and steel at the same published prices everywhere, because there is no state-by-state price list for them.
